I believe in community and in shared resources. It’s better for the environment, and it’s easier on your wallet. The books and videos currently in stock are available to be checked out. Many others will be added over time. If there’s a veganism-related book or video you’d like to borrow from me, let me know. And please email me if you know of an item I should add to my library, or if you have a book you want to donate!
- 150 Vegan Favorites: Fresh, Easy, and Incredibly Delicious Recipes You Can Enjoy Every Day, by Jay Solomon. In Stock.
- Animal Ingredients A to Z. Animal products hide in places you might never imagine, and they often aren’t clearly labeled.
- Animal Liberation: The Definitive Classic of the Animal Movement, by Peter Singer. The book that started it all, for me. An ethicist’s philosophical perspective on the “use” of animals.
- Animals Matter: A Biologist Explains Why We Should Treat Animals with Compassion and Respect, by Marc Bekoff. This book is not a call for veganism, but an overview of how animals are treated and viewed by humans in a variety of ways. It poses many open-ended questions as “thought experiments.” In Stock.
- Becoming Vegan: The Complete Guide to Adopting a Healthy, Plant-Based Diet, by by Brenda Davis, Vesanto Melina.
- The China Study: The Most Comprehensive Study of Nutrition Ever Conducted and the Startling Implications for Diet, Weight Loss and Long-Term Health, by T. Colin Campbell, Thomas M. Campbell II. In Stock.
- The Conscious Cook: Delicious Meatless Recipes That Will Change the Way You Eat, by Tal Ronnen. The cookbook for chefs and foodies. If truffle oil is a delicacy you don’t keep in stock, be warned that this book is not for kitchen beginners!
- Diet For A New America, by John Robbins. I couldn’t possibly endorse this book better than this letter to the author. Many vegans I’ve met have cited this book as the cause of their eyes being opened.
- Dominion: The Power of Man, the Suffering of Animals, and a Call to Mercy, by Matthew Scully. The religious argument for veganism.
- Eating Animals, by Jonathan Safran Foer. This book had barely been released when actress Natalie Portman announced that it inspired her to go vegan overnight. Foer investigates the current animal industry, even when that means breaking into a turkey farm to get the story.
- EARTHLINGS, narrated by Joaquin Pheonix. (DVD). Also available to watch online for free at www.earthlings.com. This film contains highly disturbing, graphic footage of fishing, rodeos, bullfights, feedlots, slaughterhouses, skinning of live animals, branding, castration, vivisection, and other abuse and cruelty which are taking place at any given moment against our fellow earthlings.
- Ethical Vegetarianism, edited by Kerry Walters and Lisa Portmess. The philosophical perspective throughout history, including the writings of such famous vegetarians as Leo Tolstoy, Pythagoras, Albert Schweitzer, and Mohandas Gandhi. In Stock.
- The Face On Your Plate: The Truth About Food, by Jeffrey Moussaieff Masson. The author doesn’t hold back when describing animal exploitation for human consumption. If anthropomorphism bothers you, this is not the book for you.

- Making A Killing: The Political Economy of Animal Rights, by Bob Torres.
- The Omnivore’s Dilemma: A Natural History of Four Meals, by Michael Pollan. Not actually a “vegan book” (the author still eats meat), but I did find his investigation of feedlots and corn production to be eye-opening.
- The Sexual Politics of Meat: A Feminist-Vegetarian Critical Theory,
by Carol J. Adam. The correlation between sexism and speciesism. - Skinny Bitch, by Rory Freedman and Kim Barnouin. Sassy, in-your-face, and a quick read that covers the basics of why milk is gross, why you can’t trust the FDA, and has introduced thousands to veganism without actually using the V word. In Stock.
- Skinny Bitch Bun in the Oven: A Gutsy Guide to Becoming One Hot (and Healthy) Mother! by Rory Freedman and Kim Barnouin. Yes, you can be vegan while pregnant!
- Super Size Me, (DVD). Though most of this film focuses on the horrible health effects of eating a fast-food diet, one sometimes overlooked detail is that the filmmaker restored his health completely before releasing the video, thanks to his girlfriend, a raw vegan chef.
- That’s Why We Don’t Eat Animals: A Book About Vegans, Vegetarians, and All Living Things, by Ruby Roth. The first picture book for young children explaining animal mistreatment and encouraging compassionate eating!
- Vegan Cookies Invade Your Cookie Jar: 100 Dairy-Free Recipes for Everyone’s Favorite Treats, by Isa Chandra Moskowitz and Terry Hope Romero. The Veganomicon girls have outdone themselves with this book. It may be the only cookie book you’ll ever need. (The Gingerbread recipe was a big hit with my friends and family.)
- Vegan: The New Ethics of Eating, by Erik Marcus.
- Vegan with a Vengeance : Over 150 Delicious, Cheap, Animal-Free Recipes That Rock, by Isa Chandra Moskowitz. The author went on to write “The Veganomicon,” “Vegan Cupcakes Take Over the World,” and “Vegan Cookies Invade Your Cookie Jar.”

As far as cooking goes I think my two favorites are Terry’s Viva Vegan! and Isa’s Vegan Brunch. Both are FANTASTIC!
